Concordia Greenhouse plant sale:
We've rebooted our house plants sales with our first fundraiser since COVID! Come pick up some plants to help with the winter blues and green up your space! The House Plant Propagation Project aims to provide affordable plants to the Concordia community and beyond, while teaching volunteers about the many aspects of propagation and plant care. Prices range between $4-$20 at most, and some species are in limited supply! We do not supply bags so please bring one! However, we can help wrap your plant(s) in paper to help keep them safe from the cold.

Henry F. Hall building, 13th floor, 1455 de Maisonneuve Blvd. West, Montreal, metro station Guy-Concordia.

Photography:
Access Granted: Shoair Mavlian’s big plans for The Photographers’ Gallery. “What Photoworks allowed me to do was challenge the idea of what photography is… but also challenge the idea of curating and exhibition models”.

“The world is designed for men, and that filters through everything – it filters through life and work,” says Shoair Mavlian, who became the fifth director of The Photographers’ Gallery at the start of this year. Gender inequality in the industry is no secret. Globally, around 75 per cent of photography students are women, yet they account for only 15 per cent of professional photographers. Historically, The Photographers’ Gallery has bucked this trend. The institution was founded by a woman (Sue Davies, in 1971) and in its five-decade history, four out of five of its directors have been women. The institution has always championed women artists too, exhibiting group shows devoted to their work long before it became more normalised.

Barbara Steinman, the interview:
Montreal based visual artist, Barbara Steinman, is the recipient of the Prix Paul-Emile Borduas; the highest honour in culture and science from the government of Quebec. She is recognized as one of the first women in video arts in Canada; and an artist whose work reflects a deep concern for humanity. Barbara is a humble person but a big deal artist, so we're grateful that she shared fantastic stories about the Vancouver and Montreal art scenes in the 1980's. And we manage to learn just a little more about this otherwise private leader in the arts.
