Lecture 12 - Francesca Trop - Member Speaker, Artist and Author - "Legal Spirits"-

Francesca recently revisited the legal profession she once embraced through a series of paintings.
She published the book “Legal Spirits, Myths and Symbols of the Legal Profession”, available in
French and in English at the store of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Montréal. She currently
works on new artistic projects and gives public lectures.
Her paintings are regularly exhibited and can be found in private collections.

Lorna Mulligan is an artist, calligrapher and teacher living in Montreal.
She studied at the University of British Columbia and also at the Banff Centre. She teaches at the Visual Arts Centre in Westmount and at Rubika Montréal, a digital arts college. For many years she taught at Dawson College in the Continuing Education Department and conducted Culture in the Schools workshops through the Quebec Ministry of Education.
Lorna Mulligan has exhibited her mixed media artworks across Canada and in Europe. A number of her paintings are represented by the gallery, Beaux-arts des Amériques. Lorna was a member of the contemporary calligraphy collective, Les Calmars, throughout the twelve years of its existence. She continues to paint, inspired by the chaos in nature and the beauty of letterforms.
Tango brought Andrea and Wolf together in 2003, and after a few years of teaching together, they followed their dream and opened their own studio in 2008. Mon Tango in NDG celebrates its 13th anniversary this April.
Lecture 10 - Mon Tango - Argentine Tango Dancers - April 6th, 2021
In their 18 years of teaching, training and performing together, Andrea and Wolf have developed a style that blends the best elements of traditional and modern techniques.
The couple are known for the passion they convey when they dance, and their school for its warm, welcoming and unintimidating atmosphere.
They also organize the Tanguerafest festival every year in March, which marks International Women's Day by celebrating the women of tango, and they produce live stage shows every two years, featuring their professional team and some of their students.
Andrea, a certified yoga instructor, also teaches yoga classes. Andrea and Wolf are currently teaching classes and organizing events online while tango studios are closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lecture 9 - Glen Rotchin - Halbman Steals Home - March 22, 2021

Halbman Steals Home is his second novel, and is a travel through the life of the character, using baseball as a link and an anaology to his life.

B. Glen Rotchin has published fiction, poetry, essays, and book reviews.
He has won two Canadian Jewish Book Awards for co-editing poetry anthologies, Jerusalem: An Anthology of Jewish Canadian Poetry (1997) and A Rich Garland: Poems for A.M. Klein (2000).
His debut novel, The Rent Collector, was a finalist in 2005 for the Amazon.ca/Books in Canada First Novel Award. Rotchin lives in Montreal.

Lecture 8 - Veena Gokhale - Foodie Stories of Feisty Femmes -March 8th, 2021

As a writer-editor Veena has worked in mainstream, alternative and on-line journalism, with non-profit organizations, and published fiction.
As a fiction writer she has received writing grants, published in literary journals and anthologies and read extensively from her work.
Her novel, Land for Fatimah was published by Guernica Editions in 2018, while Bombay Wali and other stories came out in 2013. She is working on a manuscript that recasts food-related legends for the 21st century.
She also teaches online classes with her program: Slurrrrp! Indian Veggie Cooking Classes online.

The Menu
There were crispy Sabudana Wada, savoury, tapioca fritters with flecks of green chilli,
Masale Bhaat, a delicious combo of rice, vegetables and a special spice mix called Goda Masala, all cooked in ghee, clarified butter.
There was of course Amti, a pleasingly spiced dal (lentil dish) which had among other seasonings coconut flakes and Kokam, a sour berry.
There was also Mixed Vegetable Rassa, a gravy dish spiced yet again with the delightful Goda Masala.
The cooks had made Zunka-Bhakar, typical farmer's fare. The Zunka was made with chickpea-flour and spices, including lots of fiery, red chillies.
It perfectly complemented the Bhakar, flat bread made with pearl millet flour. The bread was accompanied by a dollop of freshly made white butter.
And there were chutneys and salads.
The chutneys were: flax seed, coconut-garlic and peanut.
There were two salads -- one raw, one cooked. The former was made with cucumber, so cooling, and the later with pumpkin and home-made yogurt. There were glasses of frothy buttermilk as well, flavoured with asafoetida and cumin.
Parvati bai had not stinted on dessert either. There was sweet and tart Shrikhand, flecked with strands of Saffron, King of Spices;
Karanji, a deep-fried pastry stuffed with sweetened coconut, flavoured with nutmeg,
and the dessert considered the greatest of them all -- Puran Poli. This soft, thinly layered flat bread has a lentil and jaggery filling, and it is aromatized with Cardamom, Queen of spices.
The meal was entirely vegetarian, this being a Brahmin household. This is Maharashtrian cuisine. Maharashtra is a state in Western India, capital: Mumbai. Veena hails from there.

Julia Pomeroy is a Montreal based artist who discovered painting as a teenager. Despite an affinity for this rich and versatile medium, she literally balked at the art school doorstep, choosing like so many other creative people to put her art aside and do something more “practical” with her life.
After obtaining university degrees in chemistry and then in law and working in a large law firm for a few years, she realized something was missing. Taking some time away from work, she rediscovered painting and drawing under the guidance of artists and mentors: Carolina Echeverria, Eric Carlos Bertrand and Andre Pijet.
Julia’s artwork, which portrays simpler moments from the past, is, in many ways, both a refuge and a response to the frenetic pace of corporate life—something many of her collectors can relate to.
Julia participated in numerous group shows over the past five years and her paintings can be found in private collections in Canada and the United States.

Canadian soprano Jacinthe Thibault stands out for her resolutely sensitive approach to musical creation. She made her professional opera debut with the Chants Libres company when Alternate Visions was founded in 2007.
She has been in numerous productions both in opera and in classical concert.
Several times a grants recipient from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, she has distinguished herself in numerous vocal art competitions and was nominated for the Opus awards in 2014.

After a long career at the Institut de tourisme et d’hôtellerie du Québec, Diana Bruno immediately plunged into transforming an idea into a book.
In between teaching ESL in Montreal and EFL in China and Vietnam, she freelanced as a translator, specializing in the culinary domain.

Lecture 4 - Oct.13, 2020 - Emily Jan - The Artist as Explorer

At the end of the artist's discussion, some clarification on recent wasm issues was accidentally recorded. We left it in so that anyone who missed the lecture may also listen in.
Emily Jan is a Montreal-based artist and writer. Her installations have garnered international attention, including the textile museum of Toronto and the London Gallery West, in the U.K. Her most recent exhibit was at Art Mur Montreal.
Her biophilic sculptures and installations combine the found with the fabricated to evoke the faraway and the fantastical. As a wanderer, naturalist, and collector of objects and experiences, she is guided in her work by the spirit of exploration, kinship, and curiousity.

Lecture 3- Sept 29, 2020 - Deena Dlusy-Apel and Max Beer - "Will the Second Generation Please Rise"
For the past 10 years Deena and Max have been collaborating making film documentaries. Their first film addressed the treatment of the post war Jewish refugees in Montreal.
This film is a direct offshoot of the first film. It looks at the offspring of the diminishing survivor community-the effect of being second generation and the legacy of what they have done and what they will do to keep alive the memory of the Holocaust.

Lecture 1- Sept. 1st 2020. G. Scott Macleod - "After the War with Hannelore"
Artist and filmmaker G. Scott MacLeod pays tribute to the life history of Hannelore Scheiber, a Berliner who lived in post-war Berlin. He pays homage to Hannelore in his documentary, a selection of animations and a graphic novel.
The exhibition traces her experience of the Cold War (1945 - 1989) on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.
