Agia_Mona_Dance.jpeg

Artist Bio:

Agia is a Canadian artist living in Montreal. She studied art at the Visual Arts Centre, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, E.N.C.O.R.E, with Magda Romero in Nerja, Spain. Starting in Pastel, Gouache, Ink, and some Acrylic, she chose oil painting as a medium of creation.

Her attraction towards painting landscapes and her love of colour greatly influenced her work. From there on, she was inspired by abstraction, which she expressed with vivid colours and shapes.

Mona’s exhibits in solo, duo and group shows have helped her to grow in her art, style and expression of colours, textures and shapes. Her works have been exhibited at the McClure Gallery and Victoria Hall Gallery in Westmount, at Marianopolis College, Musée des Maîtres et Artisans du Québec, Ogilvy art space, Arundel, Liv’Art Gallery, Burlington (Vermont ) and Tampa ( Florida).

She has equally participated as a donor, in exhibitions at different non-profit events. What defines Mona is her spirit and energy which enhance her expression of colour, composition and character and develop her vision of the world with an inquisitive mind. She also organizes painting trips to Europe, Asia and North America by sharing her passion for painting with other artists, hence, renewing her art constantly.

Artist Statement:

"The dance represents all that is joyful and happy. It depicts the state of mind I was in when I painted it. The brush strokes, the movement inherent in the composition , the colours are central to the mood I wished to convey.  Skyline is a fantasy land depiction. It is full of expressive colour and exotic shapes."

Alepin Kneider, Francesca

How to reach this artist:

Artist Bio:

Atkinson_Michele_Artist Photo.jpg

How to reach this artist:

atkinson.michele1@gmail.com

Artist Bio:

Bacal, Elaine

Bacal, Elaine.jpg

How to reach this artist:

ebacal@hotmail.com

Artist Bio:

Bacal graduated from Sir George Williams (Concordia) University with a BSc and has always worked in the health sciences field.

In 2015, she retired from the Department of Pathology at the Jewish General hospital after 25 years of service.

Her interest in arts and culture began early in life with music and dance. She began snapping photographs at an early age with the help of her dad and a variety of film cameras. Since going digital, Elaine’s photography has transformed – she likes to “play” with her photos by manipulating them in Photoshop and printing them on unusual substrates. She has also created traditional photo books via Blurb and Photo-In-Press, and hand-made books in other unusual 3D forms using her very own photographs.

She joined WASM in 2015 and is currently the WASM Blog Manager. Elaine is also a member of the Montreal Camera Club since 2016 and has exhibited in numerous events and galleries.

Artist Statement:

The photograph was achieved by using intentional camera movement; the camera was turned rapidly during the exposure. In Photoshop, the original image has been mirrored in the final image.

This image is a composite of four different photographs and includes one photograph with intentional camera movement.

Batra, Geetika

Batra_Geetika_Artist Photo.jpg

How to reach this artist:

gbatrahome@gmail.com

Artist Bio:

Batra is an artist that hails from Jodhpur, India. She began painting at the age of six and has since kept up the practice. She is from a Punjabi family that is incredibly modest, and compassionate, and she was raised in Rajasthan, a state with a very diverse community of cultures. The Rajasthani culture and architecture influences her and her love of vibrant colors and textures. Geetika received extensive training in oil and acrylic painting, but her true emotions and personality emerged when she started her texture and impasto collection.

Impasto paintings are profoundly indicative of how we see life, where despite trying to control elements of our lives, they develop beautifully and in their own fashion. In a similar vein, we have little control over the outcome of the petal strokes when using a palette knife. More than planning, it’s about letting it unfold and unravel in its amazing way. These vibrant petals and textures reflect various moments of our lives that perfectly fit together and create a gorgeous sight. The interplay of light offers it a completely new depth. Her fondness for vibrant colors is mirrored in the color palettes she uses in her artwork. She wants her art to bring a smile, peace, and color into the hearts of all who view it.

Artist Statement:

Love ad Care - The painting shows a Mughal princess in a garden with various animals. The Mughal Kings, such as Jahangir, were known to build gardens to please their queens in the 1600s. During the Mughal era, India reached its peak of architectural excellence and cultural glory. Jahangir’s wife, queen Nur Jahan was known to share love of buildings and gardens. Jahangir’s memoirs are invaluable source of the Mughal taste and enthusiasm for garden building. Through this painting, we can see the love that Nur Jahan felt whilst she was surrounded by these beautiful sights.

Harmony - Women in agriculture are a clear illustration of challenging the gender stereotypes and taking over the industry. Women’s abilities, leadership skills and work ethics are changing the landscape of the agriculture business and are here to stay. Facing troubles of cultural norms, male dominance, illiteracy and following traditional belief systems in South Asia are still prevalent. This painting is dedicated to all the women farmers that feed the world and face obstacles to remain a contributing part of society.

Bisaillon_Sophie_Wells Beach.jpeg

Artist Bio:

As an emergent artist, Bisaillon is interested in exploring abstract and semi-abstract art, the feeling of colors and mark making, trusting her intuition, and letting the painting that wants to emerge reveal itself.
Bisaillon begins her paintings with a spontaneous gesture. She plays with layers, applying and removing paint, scraping, and playing with textures. The process is a moment of spontaneity and exploration, at times a meditation. She likes to leave various marks of the work in progress showing mistakes and the adjustments made as it gives depth to the painting. Bisaillon feels that a painting as a life of its own. Her goal is to serve as an instrument to let the work emerge. She is inspired by her environment… nature, clouds, birds, plants, and the sky. Bisaillon aspires to reflect sensitivity in her paintings.  She uses acrylic as her primary medium with other mixed media such as pastel and crayon.

Artist Statement:

Wells Beach - a spontaneous painting emerged  ... the energy of the ocean, the waves, the rocks and a flock of white birds flying in the sky appeared playfully. It reminded me of Wells Beach where i used to spend vacations with my mother, sister and grand mother...a feminine quatuor rejuvenating at the ocean the great mother of life on earth.

Éclipse de Lune un soir d'automne - The moon represent the feminine and motherly energy. As women we experience the cycle of the moon within our own bodies. The eclipse of the moon is an auspicious and powerful timing to meditate and connect within the divine feminine and motherly qualities.

Bundaru_Doina_Dance Passion .JPG

Artist Bio:

Bundaru has always been inspired by painting and the arts, being at the same time drawn to the sciences. She chose an engineering education which she completed with a master's degree. Starting with 2014 she could allocate time to her old passion, the arts. A number of painting and drawing classes and workshops at the Cummings Centre, École des Beaux-arts de Montréal, helped her to fully immerse in this beautiful world of colors.

She gets inspired in her paintings by daily life, a beautiful sunset, interesting shapes, old memories, nature’s beauty and she is using colors as tools to bring her emotions to canvas. Bundaru currently uses acrylic and mixed media, and her style has evolved from figurative to abstract over the years. She enjoys experimenting, working with textures and playing with layers of paints and materials until the paint "speaks" to her.  Colors, shapes and texture are very important in her artistic approach, as she uses them to explore and translate her emotions into visual expressions. She is a member of the "Artists Circle West Island", Kirkland Artists Association and Women’s Art Society Montreal. She has participated in more than 50 exhibitions, three solo exhibitions, group exhibitions with associations and various organizations, exhibitions at the Gallery Gora, Galerie Ambigu, Galerie Lenoir, Galerie Valmi, CAMAC.

Artist Statement:

Women’s dance in this abstract painting is like a swirl of energy, passion, joy and love, grief or sorrow, much like the dance of the trees in the blowing wind. Sometimes melancholic in a soft breeze, angry in a storm, or joyful in a spring rain.

Doina’s painting process is like a journey that starts with the seed of an idea, followed by some planning, after which Doina lets herself guided by her emotions, colors and music. It becomes more exciting as she is progressing into this beautiful and endless world of colors and shapes. Sometimes accidents may happen, and she may arrive at a different destination, but she has fun along the way and, most of all, she enjoys the creative process.

Artist Bio:

Dunsky began her art studies at Sir George Williams University (now Concordia).  Later she took classes with various artists before deciding to study Interior Design at Dawson College.  During her more than 20 years as an interior designer, she continued to pursue her interest in art by taking classes at the Sadie Bronfman Centre for the Arts.
After retiring from a fulfilling career in interior design, Dunsky put all of her energies into painting, studying with Rita Briansky and other Montreal artists. She also participated in summer workshops at St. Lawrence College in Ontario. She has worked in oils, pastels, and acrylics and also enjoys drawing.
Dunsky's inspiration often comes from her love for music although her love of nature and family have also played an important role in her work. The beauty found in the expressive shapes of trees, the movement and lyrical shapes found in dance, in music and in nature have all influenced her paintings. Dunsky also paints portraits, enjoying the challenge of expressing the personalities or moods of her subjects.

Artist Statement:

Rhapsody in Blue - Last summer when Dunsky attended a Gershwin concert, she found herself in a seat that had her facing the back of the pianist. To her surprise, she thoroughly enjoyed and was inspired by watching the musician's movements from the back. She managed to take a quick reference photo, although it showed little of the musician, and immediately upon returning home she did a couple of quick sketches. This painting followed.

Adagio - Watching and listening to Itzhak Perlman play Beethoven's violin concerto inspired this painting. Dunsky was thinking of the adagio movement while painting this and wished to express the soulful music that she so loves as well as the expression of joy on the musician's face.

Gélinas, Marie José

Marie Jose Gelinas _ Artist.jpg

How to reach this artist:

mariejosegelinas@gmail.com

Artist Bio:

Gélinas was born in Lachine. She lived in Montreal for about ten years, and moved to  Pincourt in 1981. After putting down roots in this community, she explored diverse professional paths. Always driven by curiosity and the need to express a constantly evolving identity, Gélinas, changed direction many times. Intrigued by human behaviour, she studied linguistics and psychology. Gélinas wanted to make a difference, so she chose education. As Gélinas always felt compelled to feed hope through her actions, she ended her teaching career as a mentor in vocational education. The thread that runs through all these changes is the energy of inner transformation. This energy has always motivated her choices, and expressing it through art is simply another step in this process. Gélinas is self-taught. As a young girl, she drew: in pencil, charcoal, ink, pastel, she observed and interpreted the world around her. As an adult, her creativity was channeled into practical applications. She refinished furniture, invented teaching materials, designed games for her students, created posters and publicity material in every workplace. A lifelong diarist, she is a dedicated writer. Although yet unpublished, she has produced about twenty five short stories and she is currently working on a novel. Ever a teacher, she is building a course designed to help connected creativity to resilience,  In 2014 she took a painting class at the community center. In these classes, she learned to paint with oil, but she also discovered the incredible benefits of immersing herself in creative work for its own sake. Since her retirement in 2017, she has put creativity front and center in her life in a very concrete way. Ever a teacher, she now building a course designed to help connected creativity to resilience. Gélinas wants to share what she learned with others. she will always be curious, and never tire of exploring the endless possibilities of creative manifestation.

Artist Statement:

Marie José Gélinas is primarily a painter of landscapes. Early on, she painted impressionistic oil paintings inspired by places that were meaningful to her. As she continued to evolve, she became fascinated with the textures in the landscape. She switched to acrylic paint, and began to incorporate elements that could convey the feeling of depth and dimension she sensed in the natural world. Using a variety of recycled materials, she painted tree bark, stratified rocks, ice-covered branches and shores. The more she painted, the more she began to realize that her source was the feeling she got when she was in the landscape, more than the actual elements of the landscape. She wanted to express the energy of transformation, the hope inherent in the cyclical nature of everything, and the constant movement generated by the endless recurrence of these cycles. Her work has changed. Now, she is abstracting the landscape because it allows her to distill the connection she has to its essence. Through this process, she learned that the story told by the landscape is her story too. In nature, she is the witness. The landscape surrounds her, but it also reaches in to connect to the part of her that belongs here. Being in nature restores her sense of belonging in this place, at this time. No matter where she is in the natural world, she can find that thread to her inner landscape.

Artist Statement:

Catherine and Arctic Grey Wolf- This is a portrait of Canadian author and environmentalist Catherine Bush, posed with a grey wolf. The fragility and impermanence of our ecosystem preoccupy the artist and are driving forces behind her artworks. Landscapes in Canada have often been depicted historically as barren, empty and available for us to plunder for our personal consumption. In contrast, Glickman wants to show that these landscapes are rich and full of life, and not just ours for the taking. She is inspired by the beauty and strength of women and animals. She create images that explore what happens when the experience of Nature is internalized, when individuals understand and accept their innate connection to it and especially when they allow that experience to inspire and transport them. Her artworks are fantasy narratives in jewel-like colours, drawing heavily on illustration of the natural world. In them, woodland walks are not experienced by someone in temporary relationship to the trees and animals but become the breath and heartbeats of a person coming home. In her images, trees become sheltering, embracing beings, water is source and sustenance, and animals and plants are our companions, all rendered with energetic brushstrokes and strong colours which convey their solidity and presence

Forest Spirit- This image represents a forest spirit, working with the animals that represent her cohort.

Artist Bio:

Wherever Hall-Habeeb is she immerses herself in her surroundings and what she sees becomes subjects for her art. Here in Montréal, Hall-Habeeb is fascinated with the city. Outdoor markets, bustling streets, metro scenes, nature in the parks, the changing seasons are my favourites. She loves bright lively contrasting colours. Presently Hall-Habeeb is working in acrylic because of its fast-drying attributes which encourages the freedom of quick and spontaneous strokes.

Artist Statement:

Love, Life and Death – Frida Kahlo - Deanne expresses love and admiration for Frida Kahlo who explored her own identity and existence. She takes us into Frida Kahlo’s imagery, depicting Frida’s pain and passion yet vibrancy of life. Her beautiful peaceful fruits and flowers are disturbingly contrasted with death skulls.

Walk-through Acadie Metro- Deanne depicts a young confident musician coursing to her destination via Montreal’s Acadie metro station. The twirling acrobatic figures depicted on the station’s wall dance joyously welcoming her arrival. Deanne has done a series of Montreal metro paintings. This is her 8th.

Mother Nature - This painting shows the personification of nature as a woman. As woman is found within nature, the source and guiding force of creation; she comes alive and guides the natural forces in her path.

From Darkness to the Light - This painting is an analogy between mother nature and human body. The destruction of mother nature is like the transformation from illness to healing. For not only one component afflicted by the destruction but also many components in the eco-system. When the healing process kicks in, light comes through the eco-systems and moves forward to healing.
