Exhibits, events, and news in the arts

What's the difference between arts and crafts? One exhibition/symposium is arguing that if you're a knitter or an embroiderer, you're not crafty, you're an artist. Textile Design Now is presenting the work of 23 female designers who are all taking novel approaches to traditional textile practices. For some artists, this means 3D printing fabrics, for others, dyeing fabrics with bacteria. One artist is even experimenting with manufacturing replacement organs woven by silkworms. The exhibition is accompanied by a two-day symposium to discuss the issues facing the textile industry and bring together researchers, artists, and textile enthusiasts. Louise Pelletier is the Director of the UQAM Design Centre and one of the co-curators of Textile Design Now.
