This Dracula painting hung for centuries - then someone noticed the object. For centuries, this painting has been studied as a historical and symbolic depiction tied to Dracula’s legend. But when the image was digitally enhanced, a strange object in the background began drawing attention. At first it was dismissed as artistic style or damage from age. Then comparisons were made and the shape didn’t quite fit the explanations. That’s when curiosity turned into something harder to ignore.

To mudlark is to scavenge for a piece of history to keep. Mudlarking is having a moment, drawing people in with the hope of finding remnants of lives that came before.

Marie-Louise Plum is a mudlark who searches for historical objects on the shore of the River Thames in London, England. She says mudlarking is a way for her to look to the past to understand the present, and 'predict the future, my future.' (Adrian Di Virgilio/CBC)
