Taking the title of Bird Photographer of the Year, our Overall Winner is ‘The Frigatebird and the Diamond Ring’ by Liron Gertsman. The image shows a magnificent frigatebird silhouetted against the total solar eclipse.
“I spent well over a year of planning to capture my dream of a bird in front of the total solar eclipse,” says Gertsman. “I enlisted the help of a boat to position myself near some islets off Mazatlán that were frequented by seabirds. As the moon uncovered the sun’s edge at the end of totality, I captured this image during the eclipse phase known as the ‘diamond ring’ - a moment that lasts mere seconds.”

WALTER BENJAMIN: THE DEATH OF 'AURA'
What happens when original artworks become endless copies? German philosopher Walter Benjamin called it the death of "aura," and his concept predicted our digital age. Benjamin was a German Jewish philosopher who felt what he argued: that standing before the presence of a great artwork was transcendent. However, he also saw the possibility that mechanical reproduction could be limiting for the masses, even though it could also be dangerous. The techniques of mass reproduction were seized upon by the Nazi propaganda machine, and Benjamin fled Berlin. Apprehended by authorities after escaping to Spain, he chose to die by suicide rather than return to Germany. Yet his ideas continue to flourish in university settings around the world.

For Benjamin, the whole world was material for criticism. Illustration by Ralph Steadman
