Sandra Woods:

A few weeks ago, WASM member Sandra Woods was on-stage at The Gesù, as part of her #ArtDespitePain initiative. Rather than doing a watercolour demo, she was co-presenting a TED-style talk on pain research - with neuroscientist Dr. Zoha Deldar from McGill University - on using her art practice as a pain-management tool for severe chronic pain. This was part of PAINtalks, an annual public event featuring several talks about cutting-edge pain research organized by the Quebec Network of Junior Pain Investigators (QNJPI).

PAINtalks 2024 was held in-person 07 Nov 2024 at The Gesù, with a professionally produced livestream to about 900 additional viewers, and recorded for the QNJPI's YouTube channel. The free YouTube video of the entire event is now available!

To view Sandra's co-presentation with Dr. Deldar, on how the scientific concept of "Flow Theory" applies to Sandra's use of watercolour and plein-air painting to distract her brain from chronic pain, scroll over to about 41:15 (41 min, 15 sec). The entire event was fascinating, so if you have any interest in pain or health sciences then it's well worth viewing the whole event.
