To mark Black History Month, this Entretien arts et société will look at the issue of Afrodescendant representation on our stages and screens, and try to identify what progress has been made in recent years. Host Catherine Perrin will speak with Emilie Nicolas, columnist at Le Devoir and host, Mireille Métellus, actress, David Laurin, Artistic Director at Duceppe and Anglesh Major, actor and musician. Place des Arts’ Entretiens arts et société are free events, open to one and all. They feature lively discussions, inspired by shows and activities presented at Place des Arts, or by other topical issues.

Explore the creativity and breadth of graphic design in Quebec by delving into the history of Place des Arts. Chosen for their historical significance or to pay tribute to the artists and agencies that created them, the posters and objects in this unique exhibition do not simply tell the story of the past 60 years, they also highlight the importance of design as a preferred means of communication for announcing shows. An exhibition curated by Marc H. Choko, professor emeritus at the Université du Québec à Montréal’s School of Design.

The Festival Afropolitain Nomade, in collaboration with the Museum, invites you to a multicultural event that’s sure to reveal rich musical discoveries! This unique musical performance, the result of an international residency project that will take place as part of a partnership between Canadian Heritage, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, La Table ronde du Mois de l’histoire des Noirs, the Afromusée, the Festival Afropolitain Nomade and the Museum. The creative residency will be held at the Afromusée (January 29 to February 8, 2024) and will bring together artists Sandrine Masse (Wendat), Lydol (Cameroon), Mariusca La Slameuse (Congo) and Sarah Bergeron (Canada), under the artistic direction of Fredy Massamba, composer, and arranger as well as artistic director of the festival. On February 9 and 10, 2024, instrumentalists, slam artists, singers and creators will present the results of their collaborative creation at the McCord Stewart Museum, as part of Black History Month programming.

Artiste multidisciplinaire, éducateurice et commissaire cri et métis, Jason Baerg présente à Art Mûr une analyse des symboles de la roue de la médecine crie. Depuis 2022, Baerg sonde ses enseignements de la roue et retranscrit ses énergies et motifs au cœur de sa pratique. L’artiste entreprend ainsi un travail méticuleux qui s’inscrit sur quatre années, chacune représentant un grand quart de la roue, aussi appelée cercle de vie. Kisewâtisiw_miyootootow – S/he is Mercifully_Respectful est un arrêt à mi-parcours dans ce processus créatif.

Mark Rothko's son shares his memories of his father and the experience of curating his father's art. The Fondation Louis Vuitton is holding a major retrospective in Paris dedicated to the works of American painter Mark Rothko. It's being described as a once-in-a-lifetime experience with 115 Rothko paintings in total. Mark Rothko's son Christopher Rothko is one of the co-curators of the exhibition and he tells Brent Bambury about his memories of his father and the experience of curating the event.
