National Flag of Canada Day — February 15th. At the stroke of noon on February 15, 1965, Canada’s red and white maple leaf flag was raised for the very first time on Parliament Hill. On the same day in 1996, National Flag of Canada Day was declared. Our national flag is a symbol that unites Canadians and reflects the common values we take pride in — democracy, inclusion and equity.

On February 15, let’s celebrate 60 years of our Canadian flag!

It is thanks to generous and passionate individuals like you that we are able to present the exhibition Costume Balls: Dressing Up History, 1870-1927. It tells the extraordinary story of magnificent events through some of the most striking objects in the Museum’s collections. In a nod to Valentine's Day, dive into the process behind the restoration work of the fan from the costume “A Deck of Cards” worn in 1887.

Oscar Buzz – A Concordian alum is up for an award:


Alum Patrice Vermette nominated for Academy Award for Dune: Part 2. Past winner for Best Production Design returns to the Oscars in 2025.

Also, From Super 8 to Sundance, with a vital stop at Concordia along the way. ‘Some of the best times of my life’ were spent in the Department of Communication Studies, recalls award-winning film director and cinematographer Alfonso Maiorana.

And, Henry E. Beissel (1929-2025): Renowned author, playwright, poet and translator. The distinguished professor emeritus helped establish Concordia’s Creative Writing program.

Beissel, pictured with his wife Arlette Francière, BFA 89, at Concordia’s 2016 Alumni Recognition Awards where he was recognized with Honorary Lifetime Membership.


Distinguished writer, poet, playwright, translator and editor Henry E. Beissel passed away on January 9, 2025. He was 95.
