Check this out! Our previous presenters are keeping busy despite the pandemic.

A Montreal tango instructor has danced her way through the pandemic. The owners of an N.D.G. Argentine tango school were hit hard by the pandemic, but at least they had each other. Now, things are looking up.

The written word:
A lost dictionary: How a stolen 17th century Huron-Wendat dictionary ended up in a US library.

Fannie Dionne Dictionnaire huron-wendat–français. John Carter Brown Library, Providence, Codex Ind 12.
Research from Fannie Dionne, history PhD at McGill, suggests that a Wendat-French dictionary that is today housed at a library at Brown University in Rhode Island was stolen from its rightful owners, the Huron-Wendat nation. Dionne explains why the 112-year-old theft went undiscovered by subsequent owners, including the library. As well, Jonathan Lainey, Indigenous Cultures curator for the McCord Museum and a member of the Huron-Wendat nation, reflects on how institutions can reckon with how to trace the origins of items that were stolen or obtained unethically.

At the Art Mûr Gallery - Kanien'kehá:ka artist, Kyle Kaientó:ton Williams, inaugurates new Indigenous gallery space in Montreal.

Ka'shatsténhsera means power in Kanien'kéha, or the Mohawk language. It's one of three important concepts to the Haudenosaunee Confederacy's constitution, which is why it was chosen as the title of Kyle Williams's first solo exhibition. The emerging multidisciplinary artist will have a series of paintings and drawings on exhibition this month at Montreal gallery Art Mûr as it inaugurates a new permanent space dedicated to Indigenous art. The exhibition opens Aug. 14 and runs until Sept. 18. Williams's work focuses on portraiture and landscape, often of large concrete structures and skyscrapers, depicting the destruction of natural landscape and pride for Kahnawake's rich history of ironwork.
Art Mûr Montréal, 5826, rue St-Hubert, Montréal, QC.

The Scotia Bank Photography Award goes to Montrealer Deanna Bowen.

Deanna Bowen is a descendant of two Alabama and Kentucky born Black Prairie pioneer families from Amber Valley and Campsie, Alberta. Bowen’s family history has been the central pivot of her auto-ethnographic interdisciplinary works since the early 1990s. She makes use of a repertoire of artistic gestures in order to define the Black body and trace its presence and movement in place and time. In recent years, her work has involved close examination of her family’s migrations and their connections to Vancouver’s Hogan’s Alley and Black Strathcona, the “all-Black” towns of Oklahoma, the Kansas Exoduster migrations and the Ku Klux Klan in Canada and the United States. She has received numerous awards over the course of her career including a 2020 Governor General Award for Visual and Media Arts Award, a 2016 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, and the 2014 William H. Johnson Prize. Her writing, interviews and art works have been published in Canadian Art, The Capilano Review, The Black Prairie Archives, and Transition Magazine. Bowen is editor of the 2019 publication Other Places: Reflections on Media Arts in Canada. Deanna is Assistant Professor in Intersectional Feminist and Decolonized Practices in 2D-3D Imaging-Making at Concordia U.

Get a glimpse of this new NFB film “Stateless”:

In 1937, tens of thousands of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent were exterminated by the Dominican army on the basis of anti-black racism. Fast-forward to 2013: the Dominican Republic’s Supreme Court stripped the citizenship of anyone with Haitian parents, retroactive to 1929, rendering more than 200,000 people stateless. Director Michèle Stephenson’s new documentary follows the grassroots campaign of a young attorney named Rosa Iris, as she challenges electoral corruption and fights to protect the right to citizenship for all people.
