Élisabeth began playing the piano at age five in a household filled with music. She felt an intuitive physical relationship to the keyboard and could play for hours on end. She loved science, literature, and philosophy, but decided at 19 to pursue a career in music.

2025 Honens Silver Laureate - CARTER JOHNSON

There wasn’t a strong musical tradition in the family when Carter Johnson grew up in Campbell River, a small town on Vancouver Island. But with encouragement from his grandmother, his parents enrolled him in piano lessons when he was five and Carter fell in love with making music. By age seven, he knew he wanted to be a concert pianist.

Food:

A new, and award-winning, Chapman flavour: Sweetgrass.

Chapman's ice cream tied for first place for most innovative at the International Ice Cream Consortium with a new, unique flavour: Sweetgrass. Developed with the help of Chef Zach Keeshig, his Indigenous roots created the vanilla, almond, cinnamon-y taste of the Canadian ice cream. But during this time, Canada's economy faces a wave of uncertainty with on-going trade talks with the US. Despite that, Chapman has announced a 200-million-dollar expansion. The Canadian born and loved ice cream brand has plans to go international — and this award helps.

Made with locally sourced, fresh sweetgrass and sweetened with Canadian maple syrup, this ice cream certainly made an impression, taking first place within the category. Chef Zach Keeshig, who also attended the event, accepted the award together with the Chapman’s team.

“This international recognition means that Indigenous food and culture are being recognized on a worldwide platform now,” noted Chef Zack Keeshig, the owner of Nagaan, a restaurant in Owen Sound, Ontario, featuring Aboriginal cuisine.
