Opal Dunbar

As a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, my journey as an artist has been rooted in a passion for painting and a deep fascination with the human form. I am especially drawn to portraiture, where I explore identity, emotion, and expression.
What defines my practice is a commitment to experimentation and a love of mixed media. This approach allows me to expand the boundaries of traditional portraiture, infusing my work with dynamic energy and emotional depth.
At the core of my work is a reverence for the human spirit and a desire to capture the essence of my subjects. I use diverse materials and techniques to create portraits with nuance and complexity, inviting viewers to engage with the layered stories behind each face.
My work has been exhibited in galleries across Canada and the U.S., including in Ottawa, Toronto, New York, and Atlanta. A career highlight was participating in Star Portraits Canada, where I painted the celebrated opera star Measha Brueggergosman-Lee.
Looking ahead, I remain dedicated to evolving my practice, exploring new forms of expression, and celebrating the beauty and diversity of the human experience.
